A Little Birdie Told Me Sew

It’s Sis’s turn for a little dress makeover:

I mean really–poor thing–doesn’t have any handmade clothes. HA!

So I gathered a few fabrics that looked like they could be friends, and I set to work.

And actually, that chambray blue one is actually a 6-12 month size dress… Which, if the sleeves were big enough would make an excellent 3T shirt, but alas, it was not meant to be.

So I cut off the bottom to use as the bottom of a new skirt, and I cut off a second strip to become the waistband (the rest went back in my fabric scrap stash).

Then I cut the other fabrics into strips, two of each fabric (my strips are about 3″ wide x 9″ long, but you will vary yours based on how long you want your skirt… Thankfully, an elastic-waist skirt is pretty hard to mess up, so if in doubt, cut a little wide because the elastic waist will sort it all out in the end. 🙂

Sew each of those strips along the right side together, two at a time, then sewing the last one to the first to form a tube.

Next, add the hem by sewing it to the tube, right sides together. [I always add a row of stitches around the bottom piece of fabric for a finished look, but that is not necessary.]

To finish the skirt construction, fold under and sew the waistband; add elastic.

Then, for my “does it have a pock-it?” girl, I had to add this patch pocket, OF COURSE! 🙂

To complete the outfit, I added a birdie to a white long sleeve tee. [I love these lettuce ruffle trim long sleeve tees which are–hello–cheap as chips at $3.88 each!]

To make the birdie applique, I just cut a simple bird shape and two wing shapes out of three of the fabrics.

I zig-zag stitched the wings onto the bird, then pinned the bird to the front of the shirt and zig-zag stitched that on. Easy-peasy!

So that little dress gets a new life…

…And Sis gets a new cutie outfit, hooray!
