I have always loved children’s artwork, “primitive” artwork as it is formally known. And long before I ever had kids, I admired the fantastically funky and perfectly imperfect creations of other moms’ in-house artists.
Fast-forward a decade or two, and here I am with three little artists of my own. And I have a passion to connect God’s Word with their hearts.
So when our then-seven-year-old son created this knight drawing, I knew it would be perfect for a DIY scripture art piece.
Here’s how you can make one too!
First, scan the drawing into your computer and insert the scanned image into a Word document (>insert >picture >[select file]). Then, so you can add a verse to it, click >format >text wrapping >behind text in order to make the drawing a background image over which to type.
We chose Joshua 1:9:
This is My command–Be strong and courageous; Do not be afraid or discouraged, For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Then, print out the document and grab an 8 x 10 blank canvas (available at any craft store), a foam paint brush, and some mod podge.
Glue the image to the canvas (I used mod podge, but you could use glue). Smooth out the air bubbles and wrinkles. Then trim or tear the edges to eliminate the overhang from the 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.
Now your image will be the same size as the canvas.
Cover the canvas with a thin layer of mod podge, and leave to dry.
It will look cloudy when wet, but don’t panic: it will dry clear!
Then, paint the edges with a complimentary color. I kept the border a little rough and feathered to look a little more tough and boyish, but you can keep a clean edge, if you prefer (easy to accomplish with a foam brush or by taping off the face of the image with blue painter’s tape before painting the border).
And there you have it! Your precious one will love this art because it’s his, and it’s a great way to incorporate God’s Word into your child’s decor (and his heart).
We’re major fans of keeping God’s Word before us here at CampClem, and I’d love for you to check out some of the other DIY ways we’ve added scripture to the walls of our home:
So what are ways you keep God’s Word before your eyes and hidden in your heart? Do tell!
Hi Gina,
I’ve emailed you a few times and haven’t heard back. Do you have the same email?
Love, Rene’
