Chalk Dust Blessings

I’m immensely thankful for all the incredible books and bible studies and inspirational quotes out there, but when it comes down to it, nothing beats the Word. I like to have it on our walls and in front of our eyes and tucked away in our hearts. It is the only book in all history whose words can perform surgery on our hearts: “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

So we screwed together some leftover fence boards to remember to live by the Spirit …and are reminded of the wonderful results (acrylic on wood)…

We remember Who made each day… and rejoice (acrylic on canvas)…

We buoy up courage (Knight on Horse, this from my 8-yr-old’s bulletin board, an original crayon work by him, scanned in then printed with a verse)…

We say thanks…

and tell others why we’re thankful (acrylic on canvas)…

…But one of my favorite everyday ways to keep the truth in front of us is this little chalkboard (below). It sits in a corner of the kitchen counter and has an always-changing message: a verse, a song, a cheer of encouragement…

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)

{Hey, psst, wouldn’t it be fun to win a little something to get you started? Leave a comment (by the end of February 9th) saying what verse you have or would like to see on your walls and/or how you keep the Word in front of your family, and I’ll have the handy dandy random number generator choose a lucky winner to receive a free limited edition, signed & numbered print of the Psalm 118:24 bicycle painting. Whee! I love FREE! Free is fun.}

  1. Oh Gina, you got skills! (And we are lucky to have some of your skills hanging over our bed.) Growing up I always had some form of Psalm 23 on my walls. It was my grandmother’s life verse and means alot to my family. Today we have our wedding charge and its focus on Christ love hanging in our living room (beside our biking picture on our honeymoon and a small metal bike–we like bikes!;)

  2. Sweet Gina, I want to be like you when I “grow up”! 🙂 Your talent amazes! My verse?

“He reached down from heaven and rescued me; he drew me out of deep waters.” Psalm 18:16 NLT – It’s a beautiful reminder that God will come down to US and that He will rescue US – no matter how deep our difficulty or heartache! I love Him so!

  3. OH!!! I want I want!!!
OK so during my moms chemo (before the wreck) she was working diligently on memorizing the entirety of Psalm 139 and as soon as the wreck happened, even during the drive up to the hospital to even find out if she would survive i kept asking myself what was that one psalm she wanted so badly that she had just learned? i asked everyone at the hospital desperate too much to even think straight to look it up myself and grieving in desperation to where nothing made sense, but that psalm, so finally visitor like number 182 came in and i asked yet again did they know that psalm about how God knows our comings and goings and everything about us and this dear sister in Christ smiled at me and calmly said Oh Susan thats Psalm 139 and quoted it in its entirety the whole time me smiling (for the first time) saying YES YES YES thats the one! It took me 6 weeks (the whole time in ICU) to memorize it, but when she first awoke at Shepherd Spinal Center 6 weeks later on her birthday, I couldn’t wait to give her her bday present….not only did i memorize it to recite for her, but had typed it by memory and framed it and gave it to her….she hadn’t learned to talk yet but she mouthed the whole thing with me and her favorite verse that gives her the most comfort is verse 16 “Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” my favorite is the entire thing and also my other favorite (among everything of course) is II Corinthians 12:9-10 without a doubt 🙂 and of course Romans 8:18-19 and Romans 8:26-28 and okay ill stop now….really Gina? that was ridiculously unfair…pick a favorite scripture? thats like saying pick a favorite kid!!! hahahah
    Love you 😉

  4. My choice is Jeremiah 29:11. It always gives me peace when worries and stress are beating me down.

” For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

  5. What a beautiful post! Thank you so much for sharing. I am now on the look out for a little chalk board for my kitchen counter for revolving verses, as well. My verse is:

Psalm 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him

I love this verse and it reminds me everyday to keep trusting Him

  9. My verse for the year from the Lord is Jeremiah 29:11-“For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” How I long to find a way to put that verse up in my home. My goal is to paper our home with the Word.

  11. “And surely I am with you, always, to the very end of the age.” What a promise! His presence makes all my amazing moments in life even better, and when I walked through the darkest days of my life, the death of my son, it is this promise that gave me the hope and comfort I needed not only to survive but to thrive. So blessed!
