I brought tired Sissy home while the boys went out for a post-game meal following Big Bro’s team’s exciting win tonight. It was an epic baseball match-up. Last game of the regular season. The two undefeated teams facing off. A real nail-biter.
But it was getting late, so when I heard the garage door open an hour later, I already had the bathtub hot & ready for the boys.
But Li’l didn’t walk in.
Details unraveled. Back at the ball fields, I thought he’d gone with Dad. Dad thought he’d gone with me. And now–an hour later, almost completely dark out–our beautiful, trusting, rambunctious, precious four-year-old was unaccounted for…
…Or that’s how the story could have gone.
Thankfully another parent from Big’s team saw Li’l wandering and took him to Bill. I shudder to play out the alternative.
And as the boys hopped into the tub, Big asked, “what would you & Daddy do if [Li’l] really were missing?”
So I turned the question around to him, “Do you want to know the FIRST thing I would do? See if you can guess.”
“Go look for him?” Big asked.
“Call the police?”
“Honey, I’m going straight to the top, more powerful than the police.”
“Exactly. Why on Earth would I turn first to my feeble abilities or people’s limited power? No way, I’m going straight to the One who is ALL-powerful, the One who knows exactly where [Li’l] is every moment of every hour of every day. I’m going straight to Him and praying, ‘Lord, please help us find [Li’l].'”
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in Him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.”
I guess it’s easy to say that, with my precious ones safe in our home, that I’d go straight to God with my greatest need. But it’s a reminder to my boys that He can be trusted, and that Daddy & I trust Him. It’s a reminder to me to remember all His benefits. Remember them and take hold of them.
Praise the Lord, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise His holy name.
Praise the Lord, my soul,
and forget not all His benefits—
Who forgives all your sins
and heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses,
His deeds to the people of Israel:
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse,
nor will He harbor His anger forever;
He does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is His love for those who fear Him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
As a father has compassion on His children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him;
for He knows how we are formed,
He remembers that we are dust.
The life of mortals is like grass,
they flourish like a flower of the field;
the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
But from everlasting to everlasting
the Lord’s love is with those who fear Him,
and His righteousness with their children’s children —
with those who keep His covenant
and remember to obey His precepts.
The Lord has established His throne in heaven,
and His kingdom rules over all.
Praise the Lord, you His angels,
you mighty ones who do His bidding,
who obey His word.
Praise the Lord, all His heavenly hosts,
you His servants who do His will.
Praise the Lord, all His works
everywhere in His dominion.
Praise the Lord, my soul.
So, have you ever had a scrape with your worst nightmare? To whom did you turn, and how did it turn out?
We lost our then 7 yr old son in Times Square on a Friday evening. It was only for about 15 mins but they were looooong minutes! Prayed hard while frantically looking – then given this incredible peace. Turned back to see my Dad coming to tell me that my husband had found him! More prayers of praise and thanks.
YIKES!!!! Glad he was located QUICKLY!!
ThiS was awesome!
