So there I was, walking along with sissy one day, enjoying the serenity of this pond…

…well, and trying to keep my little water-loving girl from jumping into the pond, when I saw this sign:

Um, walk is over! Veer left!

And as I was making our hasty departure and thinking “P.S. Dear Sign Makers: The “no fishing” and “no swimming” signs, a little superfluous, don’t you think?”, I remembered sin is a lot like what’s lurking in that pond.

The people who placed that warning sign there aren’t killjoys trying to prevent me from having fun; they are seeking to protect and preserve me and others who might heed the warning. No one ever says, “That sign is just ridiculous–we should be able to swim here if we want and without them making us scared.” I’m guessing most people don’t get mad at the sign or the people who put it there.

And sometimes God gives us warnings that we can choose to receive as they are–as safeguards from a loving God who does not want His children maimed. Or we can see them as annoying restraints, arbitrary & unnecessary mandates. But the thing is, playing with sin–like feeding an alligator–is never wise. Neither can be tamed.

So, friends, could it be that God is speaking a gentle & loving warning to your heart this week as you spend time in His Word?

“‘Because he loves me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges My Name.
He will call on Me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.'” –Psalm 91:14-15
