{We Crack Ourselves Up} At The Dinner Table

We’re big fans of knock-knock jokes at the dinner table ’round here. The cheesier the better.

You know like “orange who?”

“Orange you glad I’m blogging this?”

So I say, “Knock knock.”

And Li’l Bro asks, “Who’s there?”

Me: “Mommy.”

Li’l: “Mommy who?

Me, laughing and waving my hands about all fake-frenzied: “WHAT!? YOU DON’T KNOW YOUR OWN MOTHER WHEN SHE KNOCKS ON THE DOOR?!”

{We all erupt in laughter. Even the one-year-old who is not quite sure why it’s funny, I’m sure… Come to think of it, I’m not sure any of us knows why it is… But laughter is even more contagious than yawning, you know. And we think our comic genius is epic.}

So Li’l Bro gives it a whirl.

Li’l: “Knock knock.”

Me: “who’s there?”

Li’l: “L’il.”

Me, smiling and fake-frenzied again: “CHILD, WHAT ARE YOU DOING OUT OF THIS HOUSE WITHOUT PERMISSION?! GET YOUR HINEY IN HERE AND QUIT KNOCKING ON THE DOOR!!”

{We all crack up again. I mean, we’re practically falling out of our chairs.}

Does the fact that we find this all so amusing make us more than just a little silly?

Yeah, we crack ourselves up.

But you might just surprise yourself if–over dinner tonight–you tell a few knock-knocks.

Laugh when they’re funny. Laugh when they make no sense. Watch your children’s eyes light up. Maybe feel the sparkle in your own.

It’s good to laugh.

  2. My son loves to tell a joke. So at age 11, I was concerned when he told a “bar” joke. A grasshopper walks into a bar. The bartender says, “Hey man! We have a drink named after you.” To which the grasshopper replies, “You have a drink named Steve?” We also laughed for a long time at the dinner table!!!
    FYI – he didn’t really “get” the joke. When he re-told it, he kept saying “A cricket walks into a bar….” Love that he doesn’t understand it but still laughs!!!
