I spent a summer off from grad school serving a Christian ministry as a back country guide in Colorado. As a girly girl, it is probably one of people’s most unexpected things that I share about my past. But God doesn’t call the equipped; He equips the called.

It was a strap-a-70-pound-pack-to-your-back, dig a BIFF, pack it out, topo map, zero trace, no campfires sort of operation. And I loved every minute of it.

I met Sarah there in ’99, and–thanks to facebook–I’ve been able to keep up with her even though we live hundreds of miles apart.

Now–fast forward a few years–and she and her husband are getting ready to welcome their second little girl, and Sarah has designed and executed a fantastic modern rustic nursery. You are going to love all the special touches!

Sarah’s husband, Thomas, hung molding with her dad, made frames, changed out outlet colors, painted, hung curtains, and more. Good man!

Sarah’s mom hung from ladders, painted and painted and painted some more, sewed all the pillows and bedding and curtains, dragged her sewing machine and furniture to the house. What a woman! [And I cannot believe THIS room was transformed into the nursery! You can really see here how it looked before the ceiling moldings. Wow!]

Even big sis, Bailey, taped and painted the first roll of paint. Capturing this moment is a real treasure those sisters will share for years to come!

Sarah found the wood in a creek bed near her house [Yes, another reason that I LOVE TEXAS.] The vase has Austin rock holding up a branch. Such a lovely, whimsical art piece… and at little-to-no cost, it’s tough to beat!

Sarah’s mom smocked the gown hanging above the crib when Big Sis was born. The top bonnet and shoes were worn by Sarah and her sister when they were little. The bottom bonnet was made by a dear friend from Sarah’s grandmother’s scarf. The yellow frame was made by Sarah’s grandfather years ago. The vase is from Ireland from hubs Thomas’ dad. I just love how Sarah has incorporated beautiful family heirloom pieces in a way that works seamlessly in this modern rustic nursery.

A sweet friend let Sarah borrow her sewing machine to sew the stars. Big Sis insisted mom go to Home Depot to get a blanket and a giraffe for her baby sister… They didn’t come from Home Depot, but she picked out the presents in the crib. [I like how you’re thinking, Bailey! what better place to get a present for new sis than a hardware store? Awesome!]

The dresser was Sarah’s sister’s when she was young. The couch and mirror were her grandmother’s and her mom recovered the couch. The rocking chair was used for hubs Thomas when he was a baby. The lace on the rocker was Sarah’s grandmother’s.

How can something so collected feel so fresh? I think including the elements of crisp white furniture and modern fabrics with rustic elements like the branch and “love” sign offer the perfect backdrop for this family’s time worn pieces.

I love that this room has a story. I love that the pieces in it have a history and have been given a future. What a lovely fairytale for this new little girl!
